Chinese newcomer beats Tesla in Winter range test

Every year The Norwegian car organisation NAF and Motor.no carry out a winter range test with the electric cars on the Norwegian market; the El Prix. In this year’s edition, 23 new electric cars took part. The cars in the test departed at the same time from Oslo and drove on a predetermined loop to the north. The temperature was between 2 and 10 degrees below zero.

This years winner was a bit of a surprise, as the Chinese newcomer HiPhi Z made an impressive effort.

– Tesla has dominated our range tests since 2020. Today, the HiPhi Z has beaten the Tesla Model 3 in terms of range, says Nils Sødal, senior communications advisor at NAF.

HiPhi Z has an official WLTP range of 555 kilometers but managed a full 522 kilometers in the range test, compared with the Tesla Model 3 which came 441 kilometers but has a WLTP range of 629 kilometers. Tesla actually surprised in the opposite direction, since it performance was in the bottom half of the starting field.

The Kia EV9, Nio EL6 and Xpeng G9 are highlighted as three family cars that did well in the range tests as well. They were clearly the best in their segment with a deviation of only 12-13 percent.

However, According to NAF, another important part of the tests is the charging speed. If a car can get back on the road quickly, it can still be significantly faster on the long journey, even if the range is not the longest. Therefore, the second stage of the winter tests will be a charging test. The results will be reported shortly.
