New battery from Zeekr can withstand fire, free fall and cold

Today Zeekr launched its brand new and self-developed electric car battery called “the Golden Battery” with a lot of unique properties. It is the world’s first mass-produced 800-volt-based LFP battery (lithium iron phosphate) and should be able to charge with incredible charging effects of up to 500 kW.

The high charging power makes it the world’s fastest-charging LFP battery in series production. Cars with the battery should be able to quickly charge with a range of 500 kilometers in just 15 minutes, Zeekr said during the presentation.

But the most spectacular thing is how safe the new battery is. Zeekr claims it should be able to withstand everything from extreme cold (-45°C) for 8 hours, 1000 degree (°C) fire, endure floods and be able to be dropped freely from great heights – and still work.

In addition, it’s possible to drive over it with a steam roller. Something that Zeekr demonstrates in the short video below:

One interesting fact is that Zeekr’s new high-performance battery is 14.8 percent cheaper per watt-hour than traditional lithium-ion batteries. Many of the key processes in battery production are automated, which should help reduce costs significantly.

Production of the new battery started today at a facility in Zhejiang, China. The first models to get the new battery are the Zeekr 007, which will be delivered to the first customers in January.
