BMW has set clear goals for the future. In 2026, 33 percent of the company’s cars sold will be electric cars. BMW recently announced that they will discontinue the production of internal combustion cars at its Munich factory, and are now describing a clear tipping point.
In connection with a media conference where BMW summarized 2023, the car manufacturer’s chief economist Walter Mertl shared a clear observation.
– The tipping point for the internal combustion engine has already been here, said Walter and tells us that it occurred last year. He adds that growth in sales of internal combustion engine cars has stalled and describes a plateau in internal combustion engine sales that will continue, only to then suddenly fall.
Last year, fifteen percent of all new cars that BMW sold were electric, a total of 376,183 cars. To reach the goal of 33 percent, BMW relies on the new model series Neue Klasse, which will result in six completely new electric cars. The series promises to be a big technological leap and place BMW at the forefront of the electric car market.
